Mental Health Awareness Training
WAPOU held the very first mental health seminar designed specially for Prison Officers in August 2017. 180 people attended and enjoyed presentations made by the following leading mental health organisations:
- Black Dog Institute
- WA Association for Mental Health
- Black Dog Ride
- CPSU / SPSF
Following on from the member interest and success of the seminar, WAPOU developed a Mental Health Awareness Training program to specially encourage all prison officers to STAND T.A.L.R.
STAND T.A.L.R is designed to encourage prison officers to overcome the resistance, fear and stigma within corrective services of seeking professional help when faced with the challenges of poor mental health. STAND T.A.L.R promotes and supports prison officers, colleagues and most importantly family members to ask for professional help to treat and overcome anxiety, stress and depression.
TALK – If you need help and support
ASK – If you think a colleague or a family member needs help and support
LISTEN – Simply listen if a colleague or family member chooses to confide in you
REFER – Always refer a person to professional help
