Staff Safety
Prison Officers have a risky job, and the vast majority of prisons in WA are overcrowded.
This overcrowding creates a dangerous workplace for our members.
Many prisons are consistently short staffed, putting Prison Officers in greater danger. Staff are regularly being asked to work extra shifts to cover shortfalls, but even after these measures, some prisons are still running short staffed.
The government is planning to recruit more officers, but they can’t be recruited and trained quickly enough to alleviate the current overcrowding crisis.
Respect the Risk is asking the Western Australian Government to ensure the safety of Prison Officers by increasing recruitment efforts and guaranteeing an adequate number of staff in each prison.
