Casuarina Incident

Sunday 12 Apr 2020

An incident at Casuarina Prison on Sunday 29 March 2020, where a number of inmates made their way on to a roof, led to one of our members being injured after being struck on the head by a projectile thrown by one of the prisoners involved in the incident.

The member was contacted by WAPOU. They advised that they had received some stitches to the head and were naturally a bit shaken by the incident. They were not required to stay in the hospital but were required to stay home for at least a week to recuperate. We wish them a speedy recovery.

This incident came just days after a similar incited at Hakea Prison.

These incidents provide clear examples of the ongoing risks which our members are facing in increasingly difficult times.

WAPOU will continue to shine a light on the outstanding work being done by its members in increasingly volatile workplaces.

Prison Officers are genuine frontline staff and first responders, providing an invaluable service to the community.

There has never been a more appropriate time to Respect the Risk.
