Corruption and Crime Commission investigation into the WA prison system

Friday 08 Dec 2017

We have been made aware that a Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC) investigation is currently underway into the Western Australian prison system. We understand that the investigation, jointly conducted by the CCC, Department of Justice and WA Police Force, has been underway for approximately 12 months.

Today the CCC stated the following:
  • The investigation has focused on improper associations between officers and prisoners, and the facilitation of drugs and contraband into WA prisons
  • Two officers have been stood down from duty as a result of the ongoing investigation so far
  • Witnesses with information of value to the investigation may be offered protection under the Corruption, Crime and Misconduct Act 2003.
We will never condone, under any circumstances, trafficking or illegal activities by prison officers.

However it is important to note that the investigation is still ongoing and that this misconduct is only suspected at this point. Due process must always be followed, and innocence presumed until guilt is proven.
