New units at Casuarina Prison

Friday 31 Jul 2020

The union supported the addition of new units at Casuarina Prison to help relieve a system that was bursting at the seams.

The expansion came as remand numbers were set to increase with the resumption of courts and easing of COVID-19 restrictions.

The units have been populated with maximum security prisoners from Hakea, which will help ease the strain on the prison caused by overcrowding, staff shortages and rolling lockdowns.

The two units accommodate 128 beds each, with a further two units set to open in October.

The Department of Justice and Cox Architects have presented the plans for the Casuarina 344 Project which will include the new ‘Super-Max’ Unit.

These plans will be presented to the State Council in August where delegates will have an opportunity to provide comments and questions.
