WAPOU welcomes the long overdue announcement from the Department of Justice this week that they are engaging in the bulk recruitment of Vocational Support Officers.
Vocational Support Officers play a vital role in the rehabilitation and up-skilling of prisoners.
VSO vacancies have been a standing agenda item at our monthly meetings with the department for at least three years. WAPOU has been imploring the department to do more to fill an extremely high number of vacancies in VSO positions that exist state-wide.
During that time, representatives from DoJ Human Resources and Superintendents have blamed each other for the fact that vacancies were not being advertised.
WAPOU looks forward to seeing some positive results from this new concerted effort to fill VSO vacancies.
